Principal's March Letter 2014

11 March 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Time has passed us very quickly as we come towards the end of Term 1!

February has been a very dry month and we have been asking the children to hydrate themselves more often. In view of the present inter-Monsoon period which typically lasts from late March to May, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has mentioned that the quality of air in Singapore may be affected depending on the wind direction coupled with the increment of hotspots in our neighbouring countries.  The school would like to encourage all parents of children with pre-existing lungs or respiratory medical conditions to bring their medication, e.g. inhalers, to school.  We will also be monitoring the children’s health condition and work closely with you to ensure that they are healthy, safe and happy.

As part of looking after our environment through the reduction of paper usage, I will be writing to you on a bi-monthly basis instead. Any news updates in between will be through our website. Lets work together to do our part for our environment!

Hot Off the Press – We Did It AGAIN!

It gives me great pleasure to share the good news that our teacher team Mr Mohan and Mr Yousoff have clinched a Merit Award at the Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA) 2014 competition organised by the Educational Technology Division of MOE and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Visit our website to see the winning entry!

Developing Entrepreneural Skills – Sentosa Kids Flea Market

As part of developing our pupils’ entrepreneural skills, we have partnered with Sentosa to set up stalls at the unique Sentosa Kidz Flea Market near the Beach Station from 16 to 20 March, 2pm to 7pm. Our students from Primary 4 and 5 will be selling things such as books, fashion accessories and soft toys to raise funds for the Hospice Care Association.

The P4 pupils attended a series of Social Entrepreneurship Skills workshops in February this year. In Sentosa, they will put in practice these entrepreneur skills and learn how to operate a stall, develop self-confidence and hone their social skills. Do join us for a fun-filled time at Sentosa during these coming school holidays.

ExCEL Fest 2014 – Valuing Every Child, Learning for Life

MOE ExCEL Fest is an annual event that celebrates innovative practices in schools and allows parents and members of the public to find out more about the latest developments in our education landscape.

As a learning platform to acquire innovative practices in schools, all BRPS teachers will be attending the MOE ExCEL Fest 2014 on Friday 11th April. Therefore, school dismissal time on Friday, 11th April will be at 1.30pm instead.

If your child goes home by taking the school bus, the school has informed the bus company to pick your child at 1.30 pm. Otherwise, please make the necessary arrangements for your child’s transport home.

MOE ExCEL Fest 2014 will be open to the public on 12 April 2014 (Saturday) at Suntec Singapore Hall 401-402. The theme for MOE ExCEL Fest 2014, Valuing Every Child, Learning for Life, turns the spotlight on our Student-Centric and Values-Driven education that offers Breadth, Depth and Length for the holistic development of our children.

We would like to invite you to attend the Exhibitions, Seminars and Sharing Sessions to learn more about what schools do and what parents can do to support their children’s learning.  What’s in store for you:

We look forward to seeing you at MOE ExCEL Fest 2014!

Examination Matters

In April, all pupils with the exception of Primary 1 & 2 will be taking their Semestral Assessment 1 this year. For the year’s overall score of a subject, 30% will be from SA1 and 70% from SA2 (Primary 1 & 2 – Holistic Assessment). A detailed examination schedule for each level is attached.

Please be reminded that any absence during the examination must be supported with the necessary documentation like a doctor’s medical certificate, death certificate of bereavement, etc. If your child/ward is absent without a valid reason, he/she will be not be awarded any marks for the paper that he/she did not take.

Do take time during this March school holidays to revise with your child and prepare for the examinations!

B. Reflections

Having self-confidence is a key part in becoming a healthy and mature individual. A child who has self-confidence is more likely to persist and overcome problems. Self-confidence comes about through a sense of competence and is gained over time when a child takes on new challenges and achieves success no matter how small.

As parents we can help our children gain greater self-confidence by giving lots of opportunities to practice and master their skills and to encourage them even when they make mistakes. We also would need to give chances when appropriate for our children to look after themselves. As they grow and gain confidence and independence, their abilities to explore and overcome their own fears will definitely help them stand tall in a world of rapid change.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Ou
