Learning Beyond the Classroom at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Our Primary 6 students recently embarked on an enriching Science Learning Journey to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, where they experienced Singapore's unique mangrove ecosystem up close. Guided by the knowledgeable facilitators from iNature, students journeyed through the reserve, carefully observing the diverse plants and wildlife in their natural habitat.
As they encountered mangrove trees, mudskippers, fiddler crabs, birds and other fascinating organisms, students witnessed firsthand the adaptations they had previously learnt about in the classroom. One of the highlights of the learning journey was encountering a magnificent Golden Orb Weaver spinning its intricate web among the trees. The experience deepened their understanding of biodiversity and conservation while demonstrating how Science can be observed in the real world.
Reflecting on her learning journey, Minh Anh from 6 Opal shared, "It was amazing to actually hear the cicadas suddenly fall silent when rain was approaching. I had learnt that animals can sense changes in the environment, but experiencing it for myself made it so memorable." Her reflection captures how being immersed in nature allowed students to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and authentic observations.
Similarly, Ghim Chiu from 6 Topaz reflected, "I was surprised by how much life existed in the mangroves. Looking closely at the plants and animals in their natural habitat helped me understand how each living thing is specially adapted to survive. It made me appreciate nature in a way I never had before."
Through this experiential learning opportunity, our students not only strengthened their understanding of adaptation and ecosystems but also developed a deeper appreciation for Singapore's rich biodiversity. The learning journey inspired curiosity, keen observation and a stronger sense of environmental stewardship, reinforcing that some of the most meaningful lessons take place beyond the classroom.
